EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A 19-year-old woman has been charged following a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred Monday night in northwest El Paso.
According to authorities, the incident took place around 9:15 p.m. in the 6300 block of North Desert Boulevard. Ambar Chavira was driving a silver 2016 BMW 428i when she failed to control her speed, resulting in a four-car collision.
Jaime Andrade, 56, driving a Subaru Outback involved in the crash, later died from his injuries at University Medical Center.
Witnesses reported a chaotic scene, stating another vehicle struck the wreckage shortly after the first collision. Authorities allege Chavira fled the scene on foot without providing assistance.
Officers located Chavira at a residence on Rosa Gandara Drive, where she exhibited signs of intoxication. The affidavit notes she admitted to consuming multiple alcoholic beverages at a local bar before attempting to drive. Chavira also acknowledged leaving the scene, despite being directed to stay and call 911.
Investigation and Regulatory Response
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has initiated an investigation to determine if the bar unlawfully served alcohol, given Chavira's age.
This incident has prompted renewed calls for legislative reform from the Sober Streets Movement, a group advocating for stricter measures against impaired driving.
The case remains under investigation by El Paso police.
