FARGO — A 49-year-old man from Christine, North Dakota, died early Sunday after a high-speed crash involving a fleeing vehicle.
The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. on August 23, when a North Dakota State Trooper attempted to stop a BMW M550xi traveling at 109 mph in a 55 mph zone. The driver, a 19-year-old man from Grand Forks, fled eastbound on Cass County Road 14, ignoring traffic signs and turning off the vehicle's headlights.
Authorities said the BMW then T-boned a southbound Honda Accord on Cass County Road 81, resulting in the immediate death of the Honda's driver. The other vehicle's occupants, including two passengers aged 16 and 17, were transported to Sanford Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash took place shortly after a car club meetup nearby. According to witnesses, many attendees departed the location when law enforcement arrived, but the driver of the BMW chose to evade police. Charges against the driver are currently under investigation, and the North Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing to look into the incident.
