Ohio Rep. Marcy Kaptur hospitalized following hit-and-run crash while en route to church, say police.

WASHINGTON (TNND) — Ohio Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur was Sunday morning following a crash while en route to church near Toledo.

According to the Toledo Police Department, Kaptur, 80, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Kegan Zimmerman when it was struck. Both Kaptur and the driver sustained injuries; however, police reported that Kaptur's injuries are not life-threatening and she remains in stable condition.

A statement from Kaptur's office indicated that she is “active, alert” and receiving treatment. The Congresswoman expressed gratitude towards first responders from the Toledo Police and Fire Departments, as well as medical professionals.

Officers responded to the incident around 10:48 a.m. near North Detroit and West Central avenues. Both vehicles involved were impounded, and evidence collection is currently ongoing. The driver of the other vehicle left the scene.

Toledo police reported significant progress in identifying the driver and are following strong leads. Witnesses indicated that the suspect was picked up by another vehicle to escape.
