Five Teenagers Killed in Grand Junction Crash, NTSB Investigating
GRAND JUNCTION, CO—A single-vehicle crash on Lookout Lane claimed the lives of five 17-year-old boys around midnight on August 8, according to authorities.
The teenagers were traveling southeast in a 2003 Cadillac CTS when the driver “failed to negotiate a leftward curve,” leading the vehicle off the roadway, rolling down an embankment, and crashing over a cliff into the rocks below. The victims were identified by the Mesa County Coroner's Office as Tristan Tucker, William Simms, Tyler Kersey-Huffman, Titus Gould, and Braden Taylor.
A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) described the road as having two lanes and multiple curves, with dry conditions at the time of the incident. Investigators noted tire tracks indicating the vehicle left the road, crossed a sidewalk, and traveled over a lawn prior to the cliff escape.
NTSB officials stated that all aspects of the crash are under investigation to determine the probable cause and to formulate safety recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future. Final reports detailing the probable cause and contributing factors are typically released within 12 to 24 months of the accident.
Officials from local emergency response agencies were dispatched to the scene but reported no injuries among other parties. The area experienced lane closures during the initial investigation and recovery efforts.
