STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (7News) — A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Stafford County early Friday morning resulted in five fatalities and numerous injuries.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:35 a.m. on May 29, near mile marker 146, approximately two miles south of the Quantico exit. According to authorities, a charter bus operated by E&P Travel collided with slowing traffic in a work zone, triggering a chain reaction involving a Chevrolet Suburban and an Acura SUV.
Five individuals were pronounced dead, including two children. A total of 44 victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment. At the time of the crash, the bus was carrying around 34 passengers.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation in conjunction with Virginia State Police (VSP). A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, while a comprehensive investigation may take up to 24 months.
VSP reported that the deceased included four occupants of the Acura, identified as a 45-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy, all from Greenfield, Massachusetts. The fifth victim, a 25-year-old woman from Worcester, was in the Suburban.
Mary Washington Healthcare confirmed they received 19 patients, with 15 released and four remaining hospitalized as of Saturday, one in critical condition.
The bus driver, identified as Jing S. Dong, 48, from Staten Island, sustained injuries, and pending charges are reported. E&P Travel operates a small fleet and is currently under scrutiny from federal regulators.
