MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — A boat carrying seven people crashed near Shem Creek on April 25, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.

According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Witnesses reported that multiple occupants had blood on their clothes and visible injuries. The victims were transported to the Medical University of South Carolina for treatment.

Nineteen-year-old Evan Andrew Greenleigh, a first-year cadet at The Citadel, was declared dead shortly before 11:30 p.m. The Charleston County Coroner's Office attributed his death to blunt force injuries. Greenleigh, a mechanical engineering major from Bethesda, Md., was also known for his involvement in the school's Division I tennis team.

Initial reports from the Mount Pleasant Police Department indicate that alcohol may have been a factor. A female passenger stated they had been drinking approximately four hours before the crash, while indicating a male identified as the boat's driver. Both their names were redacted from the police report. The woman also mentioned they had only met the driver that day at a local bar.

DNR is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Mount Pleasant Police Department. DNR spokesperson Cheyenne Twilley noted that findings would be shared once the investigation is complete.

A memorial tennis scholarship fund in Greenleigh's honor has been established at The Citadel, and donations are being accepted for it as well as for the Jewish Cadet Life Fund.
