Nelson Man Injured in Wrong-Way Crash on I-295 Southbound in Portland
A wrong-way crash on I-295 southbound in Portland, Maine, resulted in serious injuries to a Nelson man and two others on Saturday evening.
The collision occurred shortly after 7 p.m. when 88-year-old Ronald Ferguson of Nelson, New Hampshire, inadvertently entered the southbound lanes in his 2020 Subaru Outback. Ferguson's vehicle collided head-on with a 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse traveling southbound.
All three individuals, including Ferguson, his female passenger, and the female driver of the Mitsubishi, were transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash prompted the closure of the Exit 8 off-ramp, causing significant traffic delays in the area. The Maine Department of Transportation issued an alert advising, “Portland, 295 South Exit 8 Off Ramp, Ramp Closed due to Crash, Expect Delays.”
Lanes were reopened shortly before 9:20 p.m. The incident is under investigation by the Maine State Police.
