Lede: A fatal hit-and-run involving a Waymo self-driving vehicle occurred on Sept. 14 near Arizona State University in Tempe.
According to Tempe Police, the incident took place around 1:20 p.m. at the intersection of Lemon Street and Rural Road. A motorcyclist was struck while the Waymo vehicle was yielding to a pedestrian before making a right turn.
Authorities reported that the motorcyclist, who has not yet been identified, was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A passenger vehicle in an adjacent lane subsequently collided with the motorcyclist and fled the scene.
Waymo confirmed that no passengers were aboard the self-driving vehicle during the incident. “Safety is our highest priority at Waymo. We are deeply saddened by this event and we are fully cooperating with law enforcement and regulators,” the company stated.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with police seeking information related to the hit-and-run driver. Further details regarding lane closures or emergency response measures were not provided.
