MOUNT PLEASANT — A crash involving a police officer occurred this morning on Interstate 526 at Mathis Ferry Road.
Authorities reported the incident began at approximately 8:50 a.m. when a driver lost control on I-526 eastbound, resulting in a vehicle falling onto Mathis Ferry Road.
While responding to the initial crash, a Mount Pleasant police officer was involved in a secondary collision at the corner of Highway 17 and Anna Knapp Boulevard. The officer sustained moderate injuries and was transported by EMS for medical treatment. The driver of the other vehicle in this collision was not injured.
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause of the officer's collision.
The driver who fell from I-526 declined EMS transport for minor injuries. The Mount Pleasant Police Department is handling the investigation for this incident as well.
No lane closures were reported on I-526 following the crashes. Further updates may be provided as the investigations continue.
