WELD COUNTY, Colo. — A 20-year-old woman died in a crash on Larimer County Road 1 on December 4, authorities said.

Kaylee Russell was found deceased after her vehicle crashed into a canal near Timnath Reservoir. The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) confirmed that Russell had marijuana in her system and was texting while driving over the speed limit—60 mph in a curve marked for 25 mph—at the time of the accident.

The investigation revealed that Russell’s black 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan failed to navigate a left curve, drove off the road, climbed an embankment, and rolled into the canal, where it was found partially submerged and on its roof.

Authorities reported no other vehicles were involved, and the CSP’s Vehicular Crimes Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
