MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA, MA — A boating incident off Singing Beach left one man dead, another missing, and one hospitalized on Saturday afternoon.
Authorities identified the deceased as 67-year-old Carl Potter of Beverly, while 37-year-old James Wolcott of Hamilton remains unaccounted for. A 65-year-old man, whose identity was not released, is currently in critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital.
The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for Wolcott on Sunday; however, Massachusetts State Police are continuing aerial and marine operations. Crews were alerted around 4:30 p.m. regarding a boat in distress, according to Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker.
The men were aboard a 30-foot center console fishing boat that was reportedly taking on water. Two men were rescued from the ocean; Potter was transported to Beverly Hospital and pronounced dead, while the second man was airlifted for further medical treatment. A dog from the boat was also found alive.
Initial reports suggest the vessel may have struck rocks, leading to the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and lane closures are not applicable in this case.
