DOVER-FOXCROFT, ME—September 2, 2026—A vehicle has been identified in connection with a crash that left a 73-year-old man dead on Wednesday evening.

Dover-Foxcroft Police responded to a report of an unresponsive person on North Street around 8 p.m. Authorities confirmed the victim as Barry Lial of Cambridge, who was at the scene. Initial reports suggested a hit-and-run, but police indicated that evidence did not initially support that claim.

Due to limited evidence, officials are collaborating with the Maine Medical Examiner's Office and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Lial's death. The department is also seeking public assistance, specifically from anyone who was in the vicinity of North Street between Summer and Winter streets between 7:45 p.m. and 8 p.m.

On Friday, police revised their earlier statement, confirming that Lial had been struck while crossing North Street. They released a brief video showing a light-colored sedan traveling northbound at approximately 7:55 p.m. Witnesses reported that this vehicle may have signs of hood or windshield damage. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact them.

As of Saturday, detectives identified the vehicle involved in the incident, though further details remain undisclosed as the investigation continues. Police thanked the community for their assistance, emphasizing the value of public support in their efforts.
