Middletown man who tragically died in bridge crash remembered as a devoted father and grandfather.

MIDDLETOWN — A fatal crash on the Arrigoni Bridge in Portland claimed the life of 70-year-old Jozef Baran on Nov. 11 at 8:43 p.m.

According to police, Baran was driving west in a red Subaru when he collided head-on with a black Ford Escape traveling east. The driver of the Ford, a 31-year-old woman from Portland, was transported to Hartford Hospital with unspecified injuries.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, authorities said. There were no confirmed reports of additional injuries or fatalities.

The crash occurred on the bridge linking Middletown and Portland over the Connecticut River. Lane closures were implemented following the incident as crews cleared the scene.

Baran is survived by his three children and two grandchildren, as noted in his obituary. The funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Czestochowa Catholic Church, located at 79 South Main St. in Middletown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital in his memory.
