MHP Urges Caution Following Fatal School Bus Crash
JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) is emphasizing safety as school buses return for the new academic year.
MHP reports an increase in crashes involving school buses in the Jackson-Metro area. From January to August this year, there have been approximately 194 bus-related collisions compared to 177 during the same period last year. Authorities noted that in just three weeks since school reopened, there have been nine crashes involving school buses, including one fatality.
In late July, a head-on collision occurred on Highway 487 in Leake County between a pickup truck and a school bus. The pickup driver died. No students were present on the bus, but the driver sustained injuries.
Cpl. Darnika Mayfield of the MHP Public Affairs Division is urging drivers to remain vigilant in school zones. “When you see a school bus with flashing lights or a stop arm extended, please stop and pay attention,” Mayfield said. “We don't want to lose another life; one has already been lost in just three weeks of school.”
MHP is also stressing the importance of seatbelt use for all vehicle occupants.
