A Massachusetts State Police sergeant was indicted Thursday in connection with a fatal crash in Woburn on December 12, 2023.
Sgt. Scott Quigley faces felony motor vehicle homicide charges following a collision that seriously injured a van carrying 37-year-old Angelo Schettino, who died from injuries on January 13, 2024. The van driver also sustained injuries.
Quigley was off-duty during the incident and is named in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Schettino's estate. The case gained public attention amid an unrelated murder trial, where defense attorneys raised concerns about Quigley's credibility, suggesting potential cover-up by State Police.
According to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, her office only learned of the allegations during jury selection in the murder case and subsequently referred the matter to Suffolk County in January.
Authorities are investigating the initial response by State Police, including whether Quigley was impaired while driving. Reports indicate his blood alcohol content was .11, exceeding the legal limit of .08.
Following the crash, Quigley received a warning for lane violations and was on injury leave for eight months. Massachusetts State Police have announced plans for an independent investigation into the incident.
