WOBURN, MA — A suspended Massachusetts State Police sergeant appeared in court on October 3, 2023, facing a charge of felony motor vehicle homicide.
Scott Quigley, 37, is connected to a December 12, 2023, crash that resulted in the death of 37-year-old Angelo Schettino, who sustained injuries from the incident and died on January 13, 2024. According to authorities, Quigley was allegedly driving under the influence when he collided with Schettino's van.
The driver of the van also sustained injuries. Quigley, who was off-duty at the time, is named in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Schettino's estate. The allegations against him emerged during an unrelated murder case in Lowell District Court, where he was serving as an investigator. Defense attorneys questioned the integrity of the investigation, suggesting a possible cover-up by State Police.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan stated her office was unaware of the allegations until jury selection in the murder case. The matter has since been referred to Suffolk County, with an investigation into the initial handling of the case ongoing. Authorities report that Quigley's blood alcohol content was .11, above the legal limit of 0.08%.
Following the crash, Quigley received a warning for crossing marked lanes and has since been on injury leave for eight months. Currently, he remains suspended without pay.
At Tuesday's hearing, Quigley's legal team requested to preserve any existing blood evidence from the incident. Quigley received treatment at Lahey Hospital in Burlington following the crash. His trial is anticipated to start early next year, with another court date set for August.
