DeKALB, Ill. (WREX) — A man was pronounced dead and a 1-year-old child injured after a vehicle was found submerged in a creek on Wednesday night.
At approximately 10 p.m., the DeKalb Police Department received a report of a missing man and child who did not arrive at their destination. Officers discovered the vehicle overturned in a creek located in the 3100 block of S. First St. Preliminary findings indicate the vehicle veered off the roadway into the creek.
Responding officers worked to lift the car, allowing them to remove both individuals. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The child was transported to a Chicago-area hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
During the rescue operation, four DeKalb Police officers sustained injuries. Three of those officers received treatment for minor injuries on-site, while one was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment. All injuries are considered non-life-threatening.
The DeKalb Police Department is conducting an investigation into the incident. Authorities have not released additional information to respect the family's privacy and to maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
