ROCKFORD, Ill. — An 18-year-old faces charges related to a January crash that resulted in two fatalities.
Just before 11:30 p.m. on January 16, Rockford Police responded to reports of a vehicle collision in the 600 block of North Mulford Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a crashed vehicle and two victims: 18-year-old Leslie Moreno-Rivera, the driver, and her 14-year-old passenger.
Both victims were transported to local hospitals but were later pronounced dead.
Following an investigation, 18-year-old Jamari Sims of Machesney Park has been charged with two counts of reckless homicide and two counts of aggravated street racing. A warrant for his arrest was approved on April 2, and Sims voluntarily turned himself in on Friday.
Sims is currently under pretrial release according to Illinois law and is scheduled to appear in court on May 29. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
