Lewes Man Charged with Sixth DUI Following Crash on Hudson Road
LEWES, DE – A Lewes man faces multiple charges, including his sixth DUI, following a rear-end collision on Hudson Road near Route 9 on February 26 at 6:30 p.m.
Authorities reported that Thomas Clendaniel, 37, driving a Chevrolet S10, crashed into a Nissan operated by a 57-year-old Maryland woman, who had two passengers. Clendaniel allegedly fled the scene; the woman and her passengers were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.
After receiving a description from the victims, police found Clendaniel walking eastbound on Route 9. Officers noted signs of impairment and an odor of alcohol, but he refused standardized field sobriety tests. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to Troop 7.
A computer check revealed Clendaniel has five prior DUI convictions and was operating a vehicle on a suspended or revoked license at the time of the incident.
Clendaniel has been charged with sixth-offense DUI, three counts of second-degree vehicular assault, and several other offenses. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2 and is currently held at Sussex Correctional Institution on a $13,500 secured bond.
