Talladega Superspeedway, AL—October 1, 2023—The NASCAR Chase race was halted under a red flag with five laps remaining due to a significant crash involving three-time Cup Series champion Joey Logano.
Logano's No. 22 Ford went airborne and landed on its roof, prompting lengthy efforts by safety crews to right the vehicle. He successfully exited the car, receiving applause from spectators.
The incident began when Logano lost control following a push from Carson Hocevar, resulting in a 15-car pileup on the frontstretch. Other drivers involved included Chase Briscoe, Brad Keselowski, Austin Cindric, Josh Berry, and Riley Herbst. Herbst, driving the No. 35 Toyota, indicated a brake failure before crashing into the inside wall.
Authorities reported that Herbst required assistance exiting his vehicle but was able to stand with help from safety personnel. He sustained injuries requiring a soft cast on his left hand.
Logano, reflecting on the incident, stated, “It was very much a ‘Talladega Nights' moment.” Both drivers expressed gratitude for the safety crews' rapid response. Logano praised recent NASCAR safety enhancements, noting, “The car did a great job.”
Kyle Larson won the race shortly after the wreck was cleared, with William Byron finishing second and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. third. The victory positions Larson favorably in the Chase standings with two races remaining in the season.
