HENDERSON (KSNV) — A 14-year-old girl died after being struck by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter through a crosswalk on Racetrack Road in Henderson.

Torri Mortensen succumbed to her injuries three days following the incident, which occurred on [insert date]. Henderson Police cited 64-year-old Michael Stanton on charges of vehicular manslaughter, failing to exercise due care for a pedestrian, and overtaking a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk. Stanton was not arrested.

According to authorities, vehicular manslaughter classified as simple negligence is a misdemeanor under Nevada law, carrying a maximum penalty of six months in jail. Former Clark County District Attorney David Roger noted that this classification explains why Stanton received a citation instead of being taken into custody.

Investigators have confirmed that speed and impairment were not factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing, and Stanton is expected to appear in Henderson Municipal Court in January.

Witnesses reported significant community grief following Mortensen's death, with students at Basic Academy holding a moment of silence in her honor. Her mother shared that Torri will serve as an organ donor, stating, “She will continue to live on, just not with us.”

A GoFundMe has been established to support the Mortensen family with burial and funeral expenses.
