NORTH WINDHAM, MAINE — A vehicle crashed into an apartment building on Route 115 early July 4, resulting in one fatality and a significant gas leak.
Windham police reported the incident occurred around 7:41 a.m. Preliminary investigations indicate the vehicle crossed the center line, left the roadway, and struck the building's natural gas meter.
Authorities evacuated the affected apartment and nearby residences while emergency personnel worked to secure the scene. Route 115 was temporarily closed, and emergency power disconnections were implemented in parts of North Windham.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are withholding the driver's identity and vehicle information pending family notification.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to police reports. In a Facebook post, Windham police expressed condolences to the victim's family and thanked residents and businesses for their cooperation during the emergency response, acknowledging the efforts of all responding agencies.
