FREEPORT, Ill. (WREX) — A 31-year-old Freeport woman was killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash on U.S. Rt. 20 in rural Stephenson County early Sunday.
Authorities received reports of the crash at 5:45 a.m. on June 14, near the intersection of U.S. 20 and N. Tower Rd. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the woman outside her vehicle; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The car was traveling west on U.S. 20 when it veered off the road into a north ditch, struck a bridge embankment, became airborne, and rolled over multiple times, eventually landing in the ditch. Investigators suggest the crash may have occurred several hours prior to its discovery. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, according to evidence from the scene.
The Stephenson County Sheriff's Office and the Stephenson County Coroner's Office are conducting an investigation. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending family notification.
