A four-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 64 in Dare County on Thursday left two individuals and led to charges against one driver, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers responded to the incident around 3:15 p.m. near Deep Bay Road. David Gates, 43, of Kill Devil Hills, was traveling eastbound in a 2011 when he attempted to pass another vehicle.

According to authorities, Gates crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a 2017 Peterbilt truck traveling westbound. This initial impact caused two additional vehicles to be struck.

Both Gates and the driver of one of the other vehicles were transported to Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Troopers have charged Gates with and driving left of center. The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Lane closures were reported during emergency response efforts. Further details are pending.
