TAMPA, FL. (TNND) — An alleged street racer lost control of his vehicle, crashing into a crowd in Ybor City early Saturday, killing four people and injuring 11 others.
According to the Tampa Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m., affecting a total of 15 adults. Authorities detained 22-year-old Silas Sampson at the scene. They reported that he was driving at high speed when he struck a business, colliding with a group of patrons outside.
Three victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while one succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. Nine additional victims are receiving treatment, with one in critical condition; two others declined medical assistance for minor injuries.
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw described the situation as a “senseless tragedy,” expressing condolences to the victims' families. “Reckless driving put innocent lives in danger,” Bercaw added, affirming the commitment of the Tampa Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol to pursue justice for the victims.
