TAMPA, FL (TNND) — An alleged street racing incident resulted in a vehicle crashing into a crowd, killing four and injuring 11 early Saturday morning.
According to the Tampa Police Department, the crash occurred in Ybor City at approximately 12:45 a.m. A total of 15 adults were struck outside a business when a vehicle lost control.
Authorities detained 22-year-old Silas Sampson at the scene. Police stated that he was driving at a high speed before crashing into the establishment, impacting those gathered outside.
Three victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while one succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. Nine individuals are currently receiving treatment at local hospitals, with one in critical condition. Two victims sustained minor injuries and declined treatment at the scene.
“This morning's events represent a senseless tragedy. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families,” said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw. He added that reckless driving endangers innocent lives and emphasized the commitment of the Tampa Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol to pursue justice for the victims.
Emergency services responded promptly, providing medical aid to the injured. An investigation is ongoing, with further updates to be released as information becomes available.
