NEW YORK (FOX5NY) – A chain-reaction crash involving six vehicles on the Brooklyn Bridge resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries early Wednesday morning.
According to the FDNY, a Volkswagen driver, identified as 32-year-old Kristopher Hambas of Scarsdale, New York, died in the incident. Six additional individuals sustained injuries but are expected to survive.
The crash occurred shortly before 7:20 a.m., leading to at least three cars catching fire. Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene.
Authorities closed the Brooklyn-bound side of the bridge, with later reports indicating that the Manhattan-bound lanes were also shut down to manage the fire. The bridge reopened over an hour later.
The Brooklyn Bridge is a critical transport route, with over 125,000 vehicles crossing daily, alongside numerous pedestrians and cyclists.
The incident caused significant traffic delays, prompting New York City officials to issue an alert advising drivers to avoid the area as investigations continue.
