Lede: A 26-year-old Elkhart man was arrested for DUI following a fatal crash Saturday afternoon in LaGrange County, Indiana.
According to Indiana State Police, the incident occurred just before 1:30 p.m. on County Road 1000 West near State Road 120, approximately 4 miles north-northwest of Shipshewana.
Authorities identified Juan Diaz Perez as the driver of a black 2016 GMC SUV traveling northbound when he collided head-on with a southbound maroon 1988 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by 73-year-old James Eash of Shipshewana. Eash was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators suspect alcohol contributed to the crash. After being treated for his injuries, Diaz Perez was arrested and taken to LaGrange County Jail. He faces charges of causing death while operating a vehicle while intoxicated and operating a vehicle without a license resulting in death. As of Tuesday night, no initial court hearing for Diaz Perez was scheduled.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional details have not been released. The LaGrange County Sheriff's Department, Shipshewana Police Department, Shipshewana Fire Department, Parkview EMS, and Samaritan assisted at the scene.
