A minivan crashed onto the M/V Island Home ferry at the Steamship Authority's Vineyard Haven Terminal, resulting in a fatality on Wednesday, July 8.
The incident occurred around 9:15 a.m. when the white minivan, traveling at high speed, drove onto the vehicle deck of the ferry. According to the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office, the driver, who has not been publicly identified, died as a result of the crash.
Authorities confirmed that no charges have been filed, stating the district attorney's office is not directly involved in the investigation. Witnesses reported that the vehicle traveled the length of the empty deck before colliding with the ferry's stern loading doors.
No additional injuries to passengers or crew members were reported. After the incident, the minivan was removed from the ferry, and trips on the M/V Island Home were canceled until the noon departure. The U.S. Coast Guard later cleared the ferry to return to Woods Hole for maintenance assessment.
