INDIANAPOLIS — A police pursuit stemming from a road rage incident ended with a serious crash on Indianapolis' west side early Monday morning, leaving a woman in critical condition.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded around 3:19 a.m. to the 6700 block of West Washington Street after reports of a disturbance involving two vehicles.
IMPD reported that a Lincoln sedan was aggressively followed by a Kia SUV, whose driver displayed a firearm during the confrontation. The Kia struck the Lincoln before both vehicles entered I-465 northbound.
Authorities attempted a traffic stop on I-465, just south of the Crawfordsville Road overpass. Both vehicles initially yielded, but the Kia fled, prompting a brief chase hindered by dense fog.
Police later discovered the Kia had crashed on I-465 North and caught fire after rolling over. Fire crews extinguished the flames before arrival.
The driver, an adult female, was trapped inside the overturned vehicle and required extrication by the Speedway Fire Department and Pike Fire. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
The IMPD Traffic Unit is conducting the crash investigation, while the Internal Affairs Unit is overseeing a separate inquiry into the pursuit. The driver of the Lincoln was not injured.
