JACKSON, Miss. — A judge set a $1 million bond for a woman accused in a fatal DUI crash late Saturday.
According to the Jackson Police Department, officers responded to Highway 80 near Ellis Avenue around 11 p.m. after a white GMC struck a pedestrian. A 56-year-old man, who was attempting to cross the street, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities stated that the driver, 49-year-old Monica Magee, was intoxicated during the incident and was taken into custody for aggravated DUI. She appeared in court on Monday, where Municipal Court Judge Jeff Reynolds established her bond.
Magee claimed in court that she did not intend to harm anyone and stated she is a caregiver for her wheelchair-bound husband. Judge Reynolds expressed concern over her actions, indicating that she posed a danger to the public. A detective testified that Magee's blood alcohol content was measured at 0.14, nearly double the legal limit of 0.08.
The victim's identity has not yet been released.
