EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A 19-year-old woman has been charged in a hit-and-run crash that resulted in one fatality in northwest El Paso on Monday night.
Ambar Chavira faces a felony charge of collision involving death and has been released on bond. The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. in the 6300 block of North Desert Boulevard, where Chavira, driving a silver 2016 BMW 428i, rear-ended another vehicle, causing a four-car chain collision.
Jaime Andrade, 56, the driver of a Subaru Outback involved in the crash, succumbed to his injuries at University Medical Center. Witnesses reported that another vehicle hit the wreckage shortly after the initial collision. Authorities stated Chavira fled the scene on foot without providing aid. Her mother later contacted police to report her daughter's departure.
Officers located Chavira at a residence on Rosa Gandara Drive, noting signs of intoxication. According to the police affidavit, she acknowledged consuming alcohol at the Hope and Anchor bar prior to driving and admitted to leaving the scene despite being advised to stay.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has initiated an investigation to determine if the bar violated state laws regarding alcohol service to minors. The incident has prompted discussions on the need for legislative reform, according to the Sober Streets Movement, which advocates for families affected by impaired driving.
The investigation into the case continues, according to El Paso police.
