MONROE, Wis. (WKOW) — Police arrested Darlington Police Chief Szvon Conway on Friday night for operating while under the influence after his vehicle crashed into a retaining wall.

According to police, Conway was driving west on 13th Street at 10:36 p.m. when he lost control while turning onto 20th Avenue, striking the wall. He sustained injuries in the crash, which resulted in severe damage to his vehicle; however, the airbag did not deploy.

Officers charged Conway with 1st offense OWI, hit and run, failure to notify law enforcement of an accident, inattentive driving, and improper lane deviation. He was later released to a responsible party, with a mandatory court appearance pending.

Darlington Mayor Dave Roelli confirmed Conway's position within the department but did not clarify whether he is on leave. Roelli stated, “We will be following procedures outlined in the law dealing with matters pertaining to issues such as what we have been presented with this morning.”
