CU Buffs Quarterback Dominiq Ponder Dies in Weekend Car Crash.

BOULDER, Colo. — A tragic crash early Sunday morning claimed the life of Dominiq Ponder, a 23-year-old quarterback at the University of Colorado.

According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3 on Baseline Road near Newland Court when he lost control on a right-hand curve. His vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, struck a guardrail, hit an electrical pole, and subsequently caught fire. Ponder was at the scene. Speed is suspected to be a contributing factor.

The CU Athletics Department confirmed that spring football practice would proceed as scheduled on Monday. Teammates and coaches, including Athletic Director Fernando Lovo, expressed their devastation and emphasized the need for privacy for Ponder's family.

Ponder was a Florida native who transferred to Colorado two years ago. He appeared in two games during the 2025 season. A tribute from CU head coach Deion Sanders characterized Ponder as “Loved, Respected & a Born Leader.”

CU Athletics is offering counseling resources to student-athletes and staff following this loss.
