Wilmington Police Department Comfort Dog Killed in Crash

Tewksbury, MA – A 3-year-old therapy dog, Zena, was killed in a on Tuesday morning, according to authorities.

Zena, a Bernedoodle, was involved in the crash when another driver allegedly crossed the double yellow line and struck the vehicle of her handler, Clinician Samantha Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Following the collision, Zena was rushed to an area hospital but did not survive. The transport was facilitated under Nero's Law, which mandates that injured police dogs receive ambulance care.

Zena joined the Wilmington Police Department in 2022 at just 8 weeks old, providing comfort at schools and community events. She was a key member of the Wilmington Police Health and Recovery Unit, aimed at fostering relationships and assisting residents with various health issues.

Chief Brian Pupa expressed the department's sorrow, stating, “Zena was a beloved member of our Wilmington Police family, and her contributions will not be forgotten.”

The Tewksbury Police Department is conducting an investigation into the crash.
