WORCESTER, Mass. — City Councilor Kathleen Toomey temporarily stepped down from the Public Safety Committee following a car crash on Sept. 2.
According to police, body camera footage shows officers responding to the incident. Toomey stated that the other vehicle involved was “unlawfully parked” and unoccupied.
Authorities confirmed that an internal investigation is underway to assess whether Toomey experienced any preferential treatment due to her position.
Toomey said, “I was not in any way impaired and will face no charges,” adding that she cooperated fully with the police investigation.
To eliminate any appearance of conflict of interest, she has recused herself from matters involving the Worcester Police Department until the investigation concludes.
Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty expressed support for Toomey's decision, stating it reflects her respect for the city's institutions. Vice Chair Morris A. Bergman will assume leadership of the committee during her absence.
