PETERSBURG, Va. — A vehicle overturned on Oak Hill Road's temporary bridge Thursday afternoon, prompting three occupants to flee the scene on foot.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after 2:41 p.m. Authorities confirmed the crash involved one vehicle and resulted in no serious injuries.
Petersburg Deputy City Manager Kenneth Miller stated the incident occurred just before the vehicle reached the bridge, which has a posted speed limit of 10 miles per hour. Witnesses reported seeing the car flip over just prior to the bridge.
“Speed or driver inattention appears to be the cause,” Miller said. He added that the vehicle came to a stop on the bridge itself, at which point the occupants exited and ran.
The city's Public Works Director inspected the bridge Friday morning and found no structural damage. Residents expressed relief that the temporary bridge, constructed of steel beams and wood, remains operational.
The original Oak Hill Road bridge was closed in March due to instability, with the temporary bridge opened in recent months. A permanent bridge is expected to be completed in about a year and a half.
