DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. (CBS12) — A deadly crash at a toll booth on June 1 has prompted investigators to charge a suspected drunk driver, Deanna Harrell, 35, with vehicular homicide.

According to the Volusia Sheriff's Office, 911 calls reported erratic driving just before the crash, which killed toll booth worker Tammy Jo “Tiny Joe” Baker, 63. Witnesses observed the pickup truck nearly colliding with other vehicles before the impact.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood stated Baker had just entered the booth at 12:38 p.m., and emergency responders arrived on the scene two minutes later. “At 12:40, she's dead,” Chitwood added.

Body camera footage captured first responders treating Baker and later locating Harrell, whose vehicle became lodged in sand nearby. Authorities noted signs of intoxication, leading to Harrell's arrest and subsequent placement under the Baker Act for mental health evaluation.

On Wednesday, the sheriff's office announced charges against Harrell for vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter. The investigation remains ongoing, with a commitment to seek justice for Baker's family.

Family and community members are mourning Baker, remembered as a cheerful presence and dedicated worker. Daytona Beach Shores officials urge caution among drivers in the area, where and vehicle interactions are prevalent.
