DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. (CBS12) — A fatal crash occurred at a toll booth in Daytona Beach Shores on June 1, resulting in the death of a toll worker.

According to the Volusia Sheriff's Office, deputies received multiple 911 calls reporting a suspected drunk driver shortly before the incident at approximately 12:38 p.m. Witnesses described a pickup truck driving erratically and nearly colliding with several vehicles and objects along Peninsula Drive.

Authorities identified the driver as 35-year-old Deanna Harrell, who was allegedly drinking at a local bar prior to the crash. Sheriff Mike Chitwood stated that Harrell's vehicle struck 63-year-old Tammy Jo “Tiny Joe” Baker just moments after she entered the booth. Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene at 12:39 p.m., but Baker was shortly after.

Body camera footage released showed first responders quickly reaching Baker following the impact. Investigators located Harrell stuck in the sand along the beach after fleeing south from the crash site. Deputies reported signs of intoxication, including the smell of alcohol. Harrell was taken into custody and placed under the Baker Act for making self-harm threats.

The Volusia Sheriff's Office subsequently announced Harrell's arrest on charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter.

Sheriff Chitwood emphasized the commitment to bring justice for Baker and her family, stating, “If that investigation takes 12 hours or a year, we're going to bring justice.”

Baker's family, mourning her loss, gathered to honor her life, recalling her as a devoted mother and grandmother who brought joy to those around her. Local officials urged drivers to prioritize safety in the beachside community.
