STEELE, N.D. — A fatal crash on Interstate 94 in Kidder County claimed the life of a Bismarck man on Thursday, Aug. 28.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Malachi Stein, 20, died at approximately 6:40 a.m. while driving eastbound at a high rate of speed in the passing lane. His 2012 Nissan Versa collided with the rear of a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek.
Stein was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the Subaru, 63-year-old Scott Johnson from New Meadows, Idaho, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Johnson was wearing a seat belt.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, with assistance from multiple agencies, including the Kidder Ambulance, Kidder County Sheriff's Office, Game and Fish, Steele Fire Department, Metro Ambulance, and the Department of Transportation. Lane closures were implemented following the incident.
Steele is approximately 45 miles east of Bismarck.
