A BASE jumper crashed on Saturday afternoon at the Grotto Wall climbing area on Independence Pass in Pitkin County.
The incident occurred around 12:15 p.m., approximately 200 feet from a nearby parking area. Emergency dispatchers received a text reporting the crash and dispatched Mountain Rescue Aspen crews shortly thereafter, according to a news release from the agency. The location is roughly 9 miles southeast of Aspen.
Rescue officials indicated that the jumper landed in challenging, rocky terrain, necessitating assistance to transport the individual to an ambulance. A 13-person rescue team utilized a guided-line system to safely lower the injured jumper from the difficult area.
Details regarding the nature of the injuries and their severity were not available as of Sunday. All Mountain Rescue Aspen personnel completed their operations by 3 p.m. on Saturday.
