A 20-year-old woman died late Sunday, Aug. 30, in a hit-and-run on Interstate 95 in Brevard County, authorities said.
According to the Indian River County Sheriff's Office, the victim was Civilian Corrections Assistant Cassi Taylor, 20, who died early Monday, Aug. 31.
The crash began shortly before midnight when a Mercedes-Benz struck an alligator on I-95, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Authorities said Taylor, driving a Toyota Tacoma behind the Mercedes, swerved to avoid the disabled car, lost control and overturned.
Taylor was ejected into the roadway and was struck by an unknown vehicle that fled the scene, troopers said.
Investigators said she was not wearing a seat belt. The Mercedes driver, a 58-year-old Canadian man, was uninjured and remained at the scene.
FHP said the investigation is ongoing and asked anyone with information about the fleeing vehicle to contact FHP or Central Florida Crimeline.
