An Ames woman was charged following a crash involving a Polk County sheriff's deputy early this morning on Interstate 35.
According to authorities, Mary Gaither faces charges of operating while under the influence, child endangerment, and false imprisonment. 911 was alerted to Gaither driving the wrong way on I-35 when a deputy located her vehicle and was struck head-on.
Gaither's 14-year-old daughter sustained injuries in the crash; however, no serious injuries have been reported, as stated by the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Observations noted that Gaither smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, and exhibited impaired balance. She refused to participate in sobriety tests.
The Iowa State Patrol is handling the investigation and will serve as the primary contact for updates.
