CONWAY — An alligator over 8 feet long was euthanized after being struck by a vehicle on U.S. Highway 501 late January 10.
Authorities reported the incident occurred near the former Lake Busbee site. Responders from the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) determined that the injured alligator could not be rehabilitated.
Witnesses said the gator was located in the middle of the highway before the collision. In a statement, Morgan Hart, SCDNR alligator project leader, noted it is uncommon for alligators to be active during winter months.
The Conway Police Department initially responded to the situation, before transferring the case to SCDNR for further action. Highway lanes were temporarily closed for the response but have since reopened.
Hart emphasized that warm temperatures can cause alligators to move unpredictably. “Sometimes, they choose a direction and head for it, which can lead to dangers like crossing highways,” she said.
Nuisance gator interactions have been increasing in the region, attributed to local population growth and habitat changes. Hart urges residents to utilize resources such as GatorWise for guidance on safely coexisting with local wildlife.
