TITUSVILLE, Fla. (Oct. 9, 2023) — A Titusville police chief was fired following an off-duty crash involving a city-owned vehicle late Saturday.

The incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. near River Oaks Drive and Barna Avenue, just outside the city limits. Officers found a “partially consumed” bottle of vodka in the driven by former Chief John Lau, who sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

While at the hospital, Lau refused to participate in alcohol testing requested by a police commander, violating city policy. Following his discharge, he met with the city manager and was subsequently terminated.

Authorities noted the odor of alcohol on Lau, who exhibited bloodshot eyes. Interim Police Chief Tyler Wright stated, “This is an extremely unfortunate and avoidable incident… Thankfully, no other innocent parties were involved.”

The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation since the crash occurred outside city jurisdiction. They concluded that no criminal charges would be filed against Lau.

Lau had been serving as police chief since 2013.
