Frisco Triathlon Club Calls for Stronger Protections Following Fatal Crash

Frisco, TX — Members of the Frisco Triathlon Club are urging Texas lawmakers to enhance bicycle safety laws after two cyclists were killed near Pilot Point in January.

The advocacy follows a tragic crash that claimed the lives of club members. Jeff Beckley, a member of the club, noted that the event has profoundly impacted its community.

“It's been a traumatic experience. The day it happened all of our lives were changed forever,” Beckley said. He expressed concern over the unresolved investigation, adding, “What I would say might be the toughest part of that is we haven't gotten resolution to the accident.”

Authorities stated that the 23-year-old driver involved in the crash left the scene but later returned to cooperate. The driver, who did not possess a valid license, was reported to be and distracted at the time of the incident.

In light of the tragedy, Beckley emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures to prevent future accidents. He stated, “It was a needless accident. We'd love roads to become safer.”

Following the Pilot Point incident, two additional cyclists were killed in separate incidents involving vehicles in McKinney and Richardson. In response, Beckley and club members met with State Representative Jared Patterson to propose legislation aimed at improving cyclist safety.

Beckley called for regulations, including expanding dedicated bike paths, ensuring a minimum three-foot passing clearance for motorists, and mandating drug or alcohol testing for drivers involved in crashes.

Patterson's response was encouraging, and Beckley acknowledged the lengthy process of legislative change. “Hopeful. Rep. Patterson seemed very empathetic to our cause,” he said.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash, while the club awaits further developments.
