Emergency Incidents Involving Aircraft Under Investigation

Boston, MA (Oct. 10, 2023) — A series of aviation incidents, including a pilot's medical emergency and a close call between passenger jets, are currently under investigation as air travel increases this fall.

Authorities reported that an Air Canada flight was forced to divert to Boston Logan International Airport due to a medical emergency involving the pilot. The flight, which was traveling from Newark to Halifax, experienced complications at approximately 2:41 p.m. The first officer successfully landed the aircraft with 61 passengers onboard, and the pilot was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

In a separate incident, a Cessna 208 Caravan crash-landed in rural Alaska after the pilot reported engine trouble shortly after takeoff. The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed that the small commuter flight, with 10 people onboard, made an emergency landing in a mountain meadow. Although no injuries were initially reported, the aircraft sustained significant damage and the passengers were rescued by helicopter.

Additionally, near Boston Logan International Airport, a Delta Air Lines flight nearly collided with an American Airlines plane around 11:30 a.m. on the same day. The Delta pilots aborted their landing upon recognizing the other aircraft's takeoff. Both planes were reportedly just a few hundred feet apart at their closest point, prompting investigations by the Federal Aviation Administration and the NTSB.

Transportation officials are emphasizing the safety protocols in place while they investigate the circumstances surrounding these incidents.
