COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKRC) — Xiaoke Fan, 27, is being held on a $3 million bond following a fatal wrong-way crash on Route 315 on May 4.
According to authorities, Fan allegedly drove approximately four miles in the wrong direction before colliding with another vehicle, resulting in the death of 17-year-old Kaitlyn Spahr and serious injuries to the driver.
Witnesses reported that Spahr and the driver were returning home from a softball game at the time of the incident.
During a Franklin County Common Pleas Court hearing, Rachel Spahr, Kaitlyn's twin sister, urged the judge to deny bond, citing the devastating impact of her sister's death.
“My twin sister, my best friend, is dead because of Miss Fan's actions,” Rachel Spahr said, questioning the safety of releasing Fan before trial.
Prosecutors allege Fan stole the vehicle shortly before the incident after threatening a woman who was giving her a ride, reportedly stating, “Take me to Nationwide or I'll kill you.”
Following the crash, Fan was injured and appeared virtually in court for her arraignment. Her attorney noted that she is recovering from her injuries and is currently in a wheelchair.
Fan, a Chinese national on a student visa, has been indicted on multiple charges. Although she initially filed a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, her defense team stated that it will be refiled later due to procedural issues.
If Fan posts bond, she will be subject to GPS monitoring while awaiting trial.
