Candlelight Vigil Held for Woman Killed in Mattapan Carjacking

BOSTON, MA — Community members gathered on Tuesday evening to honor 32-year-old Mabinty Janneh, who was fatally struck by a suspected carjacker on Blue Hill Avenue on Saturday afternoon.

Janneh, a Dorchester resident, died after being hit by a vehicle allegedly stolen by Ibraim Matos, 37, of Hyde Park. Authorities reported that Matos drove the stolen RAV4 onto the sidewalk, impacting Janneh and dragging her several hundred feet before crashing into an MBTA .

Matos has been charged with murder, carjacking, motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, and leaving the scene of personal injury and death. He pleaded not guilty in court on Monday. His defense attorney stated they would evaluate the case further after a mental health assessment.

According to witnesses, bystanders pulled Matos from the vehicle and restrained him until police arrived. The investigation is ongoing, and roadway conditions were impacted during the incident.

Family and friends gathered near the crash site to remember Janneh, with her aunt, Mbalu Tarawally, expressing the community's desire for justice. Rev. Dr. Barbara Simmons and other attendees reflected on Janneh's vibrant spirit and hard-working nature.
