COLUMBUS, Ohio — A loose semitrailer tire caused a deadly crash on Interstate 70 near Miller Avenue Friday afternoon, authorities said.

According to Columbus Police, the left rear tire of a Schneider National Bulk Carrier truck traveling westbound separated near Nationwide Children's Hospital and entered the eastbound lanes.

The driver of a Taurus was struck by the tire, swerved into a concrete median and did not survive, according to the crash report. Authorities said the driver's name has not been released.

Several eastbound vehicles were affected, and witnesses reported motorists swerving to avoid debris, according to 911 calls.

Columbus Police responded, and the Accident Investigation Unit is leading the inquiry. Authorities said it is too early to determine whether charges will be filed.

According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, a nearby traffic camera was too far away to capture the crash. Police asked anyone with information to contact the Accident Investigation Unit.
